On August 30 and into the early morning hours of August 31, 2007
deputies from the Special Response Team and Narcotics and Burglary Team
conducted intense foot patrol of the city due to information received
regarding increased numbers of intoxicated pedestrians, people urinating
in public and other incidents involving disorderly conduct. Throughout the
evening deputies made thirty-two(32) field contacts, issued numerous
warnings, cited six(6) people for the city ordinance of disorderly conduct
(five of which involved urinating in pubic), and two(2) were arrested for
pedestrian under the influence.
The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is working with city council in
an attempt to deter inappropriate and criminal behavior in the downtown
area. Sheriff McClure wants to keep the downtown area a safe place for
parents to bring their children without having to be exposed to these
types of incidents.
