The K-9 Unit provides an important service in the apprehension of criminals through the use of trained canines and their law enforcement handlers. The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office utilizes canines to assist deputies with law enforcement and public-relations activities. The Sheriff’s Office through public donations currently has two canine teams. The two canines are used for narcotics detection, tracking, and patrol work.

The canine teams go through extensive training before deployment to the field. This training is ongoing as the K-9 Unit works on skills that will keep the teams proficient. Each canine lives at the home of their handler and is given the highest quality of care. The K-9 Unit works throughout the county and provides services to other functions of the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies upon request.

The Unit is supervised by Lieutenant Greg Cochran Assistant Commander of Uniform Patrol. (706) 864-0414 ext. 531
