The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the
importance of training and is committed to providing the best training
available to all personnel.
Training has been cited as the most important
responsibilities in any law enforcement agency. Training serves three
broad purposes:
• First, well-trained officers are generally better
prepared to act decisively and correctly in a broad spectrum of
situations.
• Second, training usually results in greater productivity,
self-reliance, and effectiveness.
• The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office provides
the new officers with a 10 week program after they have graduated from
Mandate Training or if he/she is a new employee from another agency within
the state. This program is known as the Field Training Program. The
program includes:
• The first two weeks of the training the officers are
assigned to the departmental training officer for orientation and
administrative procedures.
• The remaining 8 weeks of the program the officer is assigned to a
Field Training Officer who will oversee the remaining training that the
officer will need to become familiar with before they are put on the
street as a single unit. The remaining training will include: Georgia law,
Internal procedures, County familiarization, Ethics, Child abuse/Elderly
abuse, County ordinances, City ordinances, Communication skills, Driving
skills, Firearm skills, Report writing, Motor vehicle accident reporting,
Incident reports, Family violence, Traffic stops, Court procedures, Civil
procedures and many other areas of law enforcement training.
• At the end of the 10 week program the officers are requires to pass a
final exam which includes a written exam and a practical exam. If the
officer passes the program then he/she continues on as a single unit
assigned to a patrol shift (day or night shift). If there is a problem
with the final exam the area is covered again, in depth, during a remedial
training period before the officer is assigned to a shift.
As officers gain experience and knowledge through
education and training, they may become eligible for assignment to one or
more of the Department’s Specialized Units.
